A Policy Workshop Outlining The Findings From 'Student Action For Sustainability' And Building Policy Advice On The Region's Future
What It Is
The SPECTRUM 2009 Policy Workshop will bring together a group of 15-20 students from across the region and from a diversity of academic backgrounds including public policy, architecture studies, urban design, social work, political science, engineering, management, and many others for a two day session to begin to develop a policy piece to inform the Choosing our Future initiative.
The SPECTRUM 2009 Policy Workshop aims to:
-
Provide a forum in which students can engage in meaningful discussion concerning sustainability in the region and contribute their ideas to the Choosing our Future initiative.
-
Provide a means by which students’ academic interests are linked to real policy challenges, where ideas are translated into solutions to better the community.
-
Lay the foundations of continued student involvement concerning sustainability in the region by building the foundations for an on-going National Capital Region Student Network.
Policy Workshop: Topic and Theme
Examining issues of sustainability provides a multi-faceted array of topics. Assessing the challenges of the region and proposing recommendations for a resilient National Capital Region can open up the door for a variety of perspectives. The SPECTRUM 2009 Policy Workshop is committed to engaging in work that will provide meaningful and effective advice. The Policy Workshop will provide advice to the Choosing our Future initiative on sustainability principles and end-state goals for the National Capital Region.
Policy Workshop Structure
The Policy Workshop structure is still under development and will be revised once a solidified workshop topic is determined. The Policy Workshop will roll out based on the following ideas:
Day one will provide an opportunity for participants to meet one another, review conference outcomes, learn more about the Choosing Our Future initiative and to engage in an open and inclusive discussion concerning the future of the National Capital Region. Participants will brainstorm policy options for dealing with the challenges facing the region.
Day two will provide participants with an opportunity to engage in discussion around concrete actions that the region could take in facing these challenges and creating a community in which sustainability principles are upheld in an innovative, creative and committed fashion, in which citizens’ lives are ameliorated. After the two-day session, participants will continue to work to bring the policy piece together based on the roles and responsibilities of members of the core team.
